I have just received my new Canon 50D camera w/ macro lens and light.

I'd like to utilize asap, but the problem is I've never taken intra-oral images before.

Any tip on setting preference will be much appreciated.

The most important thing is to set your f-value at 22 or so.  F-value indicates the aperture size.  The higher the f-value, the smaller the aperture opening (how much your shutter will open when taking a photo.)  The depth of focus is determined by the aperture size. The lower the f-value, the depth of focus will be shallow, meaning most of your background will be blurred.  In dentistry, you want to have everything to be in focus.  So, set the f-value high at 22 or so.  Then set your flash and shutter time as needed.  Just play with your camera and flash for a while and you will find the right combination.

I set my Canon 5D at f 22 and time at 1600 or so. With the high f value, you get the focal depth that you need.  With faster shutter speed, you can still get well focused image even when your hands are a little shaky.  For the MR-14EX ring flash, I set it at +2/3, ETTL.  The key is experiementing with different settings, then you will find out what works best for you and your camera.  Have fun!
